Education/Formation

There are three steps to becoming a Redemptorist priest or brother:

First step...

The Pre-Novitiate (or Postulancy) represents the beginning of the formal formation program and can run from two to four years. The postulant lives in a Redemptorist community where, working with the formation directors, he discerns or considers his calling as a potential Redemptorist. Upon completing his studies, the postulant makes application to the novitiate.

Second step...

The novitiate is a one-year period of retreat which allows the men more time to consider their call to Redemptorist life. It’s also a time for them to steep themselves in Redemptorist history and to grow in prayer with the community. Here, they receive their Redemptorist habits while preparing to take first vows or temporary profession.

Third step...

The post-novitiate is a four-year program where the priest candidate begins or continues his studies in Theology, working toward a Master of Divinity degree (M. Div.). Brother candidates may take Theology or continue their areas of study for ministry.  At an appropriate time, usually after three years in temporary vows, both brother and clerical candidates make Perpetual Profession of Vows.
